What helps and what to avoid, situation by situation.
A tooth was knocked out
Do
- 1Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), never by the root.
- 2If it is dirty, rinse it for a few seconds in milk, without scrubbing.
- 3If you can, put it back in its socket and bite gently on a clean tissue.
- 4Otherwise, keep it in a glass of milk.
Avoid · Do not let it dry out or put it in tap water. A baby tooth must not be put back.
See a dentist within 30 minutes: that is what decides whether the tooth can be saved.
A broken or cracked tooth
Do
- 1Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- 2Keep the broken piece in milk.
- 3Apply cold to the cheek (ice in a cloth) if there is swelling.
Avoid · Avoid chewing on that side and very hot or very cold drinks.
See a dentist the same day, sooner if the pain is severe or the tooth is bleeding.
Swollen cheek, abscess
Do
- 1Apply cold to the cheek for 10 minutes, several times.
- 2Rinse with warm salt water.
- 3Sleep with your head raised.
Avoid · Never apply heat to the cheek, do not pierce the abscess.
See a dentist today. If the swelling reaches the eye or neck, or with a fever: emergency department.
Bleeding after an extraction
Do
- 1Bite on a folded gauze or clean tissue for 30 minutes without letting go.
- 2Stay seated with your head raised.
- 3Repeat once if needed.
Avoid · Do not rinse or spit, no smoking and no aspirin.
If it is still bleeding after an hour of pressure, call the practice or the emergency department.
Severe toothache
Do
- 1Take an over-the-counter painkiller as directed on the leaflet (paracetamol, for example).
- 2Rinse with warm water and gently floss between the teeth.
- 3Keep your head raised at night.
Avoid · Do not place a tablet against the gum (it burns it) and avoid aspirin if you are bleeding.
See a dentist within 24 hours, even if the pain eases.
